Historical investigations to establish the facts
Many of the top fifty law firms in the country, smaller firms, and in-house counsel have hired us for historical consulting services. Most often, they need research to establish the historical facts at issue in legal matters. However, we have done research for law firms internally as well, conducting oral histories and capturing their heritage and culture in law firm history books. Some clients have also engaged our archival expertise as they sought to organize and arrange documents obtained during discovery.
History Associates has provided consulting and research services to 26 of the top 50 law firms, as ranked by the 2018 AM Law 100. Many are repeat clients.
Our clients tend to work in legal practice areas where historical evidence can be central to the issue at hand, such as environmental, toxic torts, or intellectual property cases. But history can be at the foundation of almost any legal matter. Historical research has served clients in a wide variety of concerns, helping to reduce financial liability, obtain successful summary judgments, comply with regulatory disclosure requirements, or inform their legal strategies. History can be at the heart of crisis management situations and here too we have assisted lawyers and corporate counsel in researching issues such as holocaust assets and slavery disclosure.
Many clients have hired us again and again for historical research services over the years. They value our professional knowledge of history; our broad familiarity with government, corporate, and private records holdings; and our thorough research methods. Further, we are familiar with the legal process and can coordinate our efforts with experts from other disciplines. We understand the need to authenticate historical evidence, and our historians follow careful procedures to document their historical research and have testified regarding their sources and the stories they tell.
