World War II Memorial Mobile App Wins Prestigious 2014 American Advertising Award
History Associates developed content, imagery, and video clips for this first-of-its-kind app
History Associates, the leading U.S. historical services firm, is pleased to announce that the World War II Memorial app, the first mobile app of its kind for visitors on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was presented with a Silver American Advertising Award for Digital Marketing from the D.C. Ad Club on March 18. History Associates served on the development team for the app and was responsible for producing the content, imagery, and video clips. The American Advertising Awards, formerly the ADDYs, is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition.
The app provides an innovative way to enhance a visitor’s experience to the Memorial, providing details on the history of World War II and insights on the meaning behind many aspects of the Memorial. It offers a self-guided tour, a scavenger hunt, an infographic about the Memorial, stories representing the contributions of America’s Greatest Generation to the war effort, and an historical timeline of the conflict.
The development team was led by Carousel30, a digital agency based in Washington, D.C., who provided the strategic direction, user experience, and graphic design for the app. Other team members included Brightline Interactive, who provided the experiential strategy; and Element 84 who developed both the Android and iOS applications.
The app was commissioned by the Trust for the National Mall, the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, in collaboration with the National Park Service and the Friends of the National World War II Memorial. The goal of the project is to help visitors better appreciate the meaning and significance of the Memorial. The app was made possible with funding support from The Altria Group and the Dr. Scholl Foundation.

The DC Ad Club presented its 2014 ADDY™ Awards at the American Advertising Awards gala on Tuesday, March 18, at the 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C. The American Advertising Awards are designed to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising. This year’s competition received 647 entries from 87 agencies, design firms, in-house marketing departments, freelancers, interactive firms, production companies, PR firms, and students. A panel of 8 judges””general market and interactive””was convened to review and score the entries based on creativity, originality and creative strategy. Winning entries were honored with Gold and Silver ADDY™ Awards, along with Best of Category, Best in Public Service, Special Judges Awards, and Best of Show Awards.
