History Associates President Brian Martin to Speak on Skills Required of Professional Historians

Dr. Brian W. Martin, president of History Associates, the leading U.S. historical services firm, joins a diverse panel of experts to discuss the skills history students need in order to be successful in their careers.   The panel is part of the program of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Annual Meeting, September 18-21 in Birmingham, Alabama.

“Historians seeking employment in history businesses must prove, rather than assume, their value to those businesses,” said Dr. Martin of the issues involved. “Although you must begin with a solid foundation as a historian “ with skills in research, analysis, interpretation, and writing “ you also need the ability to collaborate with stakeholders, master a wide range of technologies, and use business-related skills such as project management and corporate communications.”

A trained historian as well as a businessman, Dr. Martin is often called upon to address the topic of the business applications of history.   In April, he spoke to a Colloquium of graduate students at West Virginia University on the subject.   He is a contributing author for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Public History, writing the chapter on “The Business of History.”

Dr. Martin will be joined on the panel by other employers, academic historians, and government agency representatives to explore what academic institutions are teaching history students compared to what skills employers demand.   The panel, entitled “Forging Business and Academic Alliances in Training Historians for the 21st-Century Marketplace” is chaired by Patrick K. Moore, director of the public history program at the University of West Florida, and takes place on Friday morning, September 20.
