History Associates Helps Visitors Visualize Gettysburg
When the Gettysburg Foundation needed images for its newly opened Museum and Visitor Center at the Gettysburg National Military Park, they turned to History Associates, who tracked down the source, location, and copyright status of 880 images for use at the museum near the famous Civil War battle. The new state-of-the-art facility, a cooperative effort between the Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service, offers a greatly expanded and enhanced experience for the park’s nearly 2 million visitors each year. In addition to locating the high-resolution images desired for the museum, History Associates also fact-checked the image captions and assisted in reading over the exhibit text for accuracy. History Associates senior historian Garry Adelman, who has been a licensed Gettysburg battlefield guide for fourteen years, headed up the effort to secure the exhibit images. Adelman, who is also vice president of the Center for Civil War Photography, could hardly conceive of a project on which he would rather work, but still notes numerous challenges. “Some of the images were very hard to locate. We ended up securing images from scores of repositories and in certain cases the image was 8 inches wide and needed to be blown up to 20 feet!”
HAI worked with the Bethesda, Maryland, based design firm of Gallagher & Associates to help the Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service realize their goals for a broader and better visitor experience. The Gettysburg Foundation is a private, nonprofit educational organization working in partnership with the National Park Service to enhance preservation and understanding of the heritage and lasting significance of Gettysburg. The foundation built the new Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, which opened to the public on April 14, 2008, with a grand opening to follow in September 2008 with the unveiling of the newly renovated 360-degree Cyclorama painting-the largest conservation effort of its kind in North America.
