History Associates Celebrates the Reopening of the Washington Monument

History Associates, the leading U.S. historical services firm, was pleased to celebrate the reopening of the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on May 12, 2014. History Associates, in collaboration with Goolrick Interpretive Group, located images and wrote the scripts for new exhibits at the Monument, as part of the design team with prime contractor Color-Ad and design firm HealyKohler Design. The monument had been closed since August 2011, when an earthquake caused damage to the structure.

“The reconstruction project was a great opportunity to refresh the exhibits at the Monument,” noted Dr. James Lide of History Associates. “Historical interpretation changes over time, and we were honored to be involved in retelling the story of this internationally recognized landmark to a new generation.”

PR-WashingtonMonumentReopeningThe new exhibits, located throughout the Monument and grounds, tell the story of George Washington – from his life as a young surveyor, to wealthy plantation and slave-owner, to military leader, to becoming the nation’s first president. They also illustrate the remarkable story of the Monument itself, detailing the engineering feats involved and the drawn-out history of its completion. At the top observation deck, maps show visitors where to find landmarks in the view below them. Historical images of the same view are displayed to show how the city has changed over time.

The National Park Service was responsible for the reconstruction in conjunction with the Trust for the National Mall. Half of the $15 million project was funded through a generous donation from philanthropist David M. Rubenstein, matched by public funds allocated by Congress.

The National Park Service and the Trust for the National Mall hosted the reopening ceremony at the Monument on May 12. Members of the design team, including historians from History Associates, attended.
