History Associates, the leading U.S. historical research firm, is pleased to announce that a book authored by the firm, The Modern History of Recreational Boating Safety, received a 2012 Platinum Hermes Creative Award from the Association of Marketing & Communication Professionals.   The awards program is an international competition honoring creators of traditional and emerging media.

PR-Hermes_Platinum-Trophy-150x200Written by Dr. Adrian Kinnane to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Safe Boating Council, The Modern History of Recreational Boating Safety spans the evolution of “pleasure boating” and details how a coalition of public and private organizations came together to make boating safer.

Dr. Kinnane researched the archives of many of the organizations involved, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Association of Safe Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), United States Power Squadrons, and the National Safe Boating Council.   He also conducted twenty oral history interviews with key personnel.

Dr. Kinnane has written organizational histories for a variety of business, nonprofit, and government entities, including the history of BoatU.S, another major boating organization. Kinnane’s other books include the 200-year company history of DuPont, a pictorial history of Villa Julie College, and an illustrated history of DC-based law firm Hogan & Hartson.

The Modern History of Recreational Boating Safety was published in 2010 and is available for purchase through the National Safe Boating Council (
