History Associates Authors the First History Book for the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)

History Associates, the leading U.S. historical research firm, has written the history of the National Institute of Nursing Research.  Authored by History Associates co-founder Philip L. Cantelon and published in September 2010, NINR: Bringing Science to Life commemorates the Institute’s twenty-five-year history at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Cantelon and his associates researched hundreds of archival records and conducted nearly twenty oral history interviews with key figures in the Institute’s history to develop the story.  The book traces the origins of the NINR, details how nursing research became part of NIH-evolving from a research center into a full institute-and explores how nursing science has progressed in the past quarter-century.

“Early advocates of nursing science helped pave the way for the NINR as it exists today, but it has not been an easy road,” said Dr. Cantelon.  “In light of the current healthcare discussion, preserving the legacy of these pioneers and documenting the lessons learned will be a valuable resource for future nursing scientists and healthcare professionals.”  He added that in its brief history, the NINR has championed the integration of nursing science into the broader scientific community, leading to research that has shortened hospital stays, enhanced health relationships, and increased focus on preventative medicine.

The book is part of the NINR’s year-long anniversary celebration, which includes special events scheduled throughout the year and into 2011.  For more information, or to download the entire book on-line, visit www.ninr.nih.gov/newsandinformation/publications/historybook.
