HAI Announces Two New Publications
History Associates Incorporated (HAI) of Rockville, Maryland, announces two new publications. HAI senior historian Adrian Kinnane has written an illustrated history of the Washington, D.C.-based international law firm Hogan & Hartson, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in September 2004. HAI historian Garry Adelman worked closely with Dr. Kinnane on the photography and layout of the book, At The Heart Of It All: A History of Hogan & Hartson L.L.P, which recounts the dramatic rise of Frank Hogan from poverty in Brooklyn, New York, to his founding role, with Nelson T. Hartson, in one of Washington’s premier law firms. The history proceeds from Hogan’s death in 1944 to document the firm’s response to changing times and its evolution into a global enterprise.
Kinnane also produced a career biography of legendary media and sports entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, a scholarship foundation established in 2000 by Cooke’s estate. The Foundation offers some of the largest and most competitive scholarships in the United States. Foundation executives asked HAI to write a career biography of Mr. Cooke so that scholarship recipients and others could learn more about their benefactor. Jack Kent Cooke: A Career Biography highlights Cooke’s remarkably diverse business activities. These evolved from encyclopedia sales in Canada during the Depression to Cooke’s success as owner of a Toronto radio station and, finally, to his immigration to the United States and subsequent interests in cable television and sports franchises. Cooke was perhaps best known as the colorful owner of the Washington Redskins but, as this biography points out, Cooke’s Redskins interest merely capped a highly varied and fascinating career.
