1981: Founding a Company
Cantelon, Carlisle, Hewlett, and Williams found History Associates on January 2, 1981. Operating from Germantown, Maryland, the company provides new professional opportunities for trained historians at a time when jobs in academia are scarce and uses their skills to make history relevant and accessible to a broad public. In addition to writing histories of companies and government agencies, the new firm contracts with the Department of Energy to select and process classified documents related to nuclear fallout from weapons testing, write policy studies, perform historical research for litigation, and conduct oral histories. In all of these early undertakings, the company sets high standards for professionalism and thoroughness.
