The Best Made Plans: Robert R. Nathan and 20th Century Liberalism (2013)
Commissioned by Nathan Associates, this biography of founder Robert R. Nathan follows his story from his working-class origins to becoming a government statistician, an entrepreneurial economist, and a feisty liberal activist. His story is told along with the rise and fall of the politics of growth and consumption that was the basis for the U.S. postwar political and economic order.
Praised by Tyler Cowen, a renowned economics expert and blogger who called it the “real history of economic thought,” this book was drawn from extensive research into Nathan Associates records, scholarly books and articles, and numerous archival sources. The research was further supported by a dozen oral history interviews with colleagues and employees.
Hardcover with dust jacket, 7” x 9”, 331 pages with photos throughout, endnotes, bibliography, and index. Published in 2013.
