With deep respect and admiration, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall—a pioneering scientist, humanitarian, and global advocate for compassion, conservation, and curiosity. Her work transformed not only our understanding of chimpanzees, but also our relationship to the natural world and to one another.
At HAI, we had the extraordinary privilege of supporting the Jane Goodall Institute through archival and collections management work. It was a profound honor to help preserve the story of a woman whose voice, vision, and values have shaped generations.
Her legacy lives on—in the forests she studied, the minds she inspired, and the global movement she sparked.
Dr. Goodall’s research on chimpanzees was revolutionary in many ways. She was a female scientist in a male-dominated field. Yet, she ventured into the field in Gombe, Tanzania, for her studies at a time when it was unusual, if not borderline improper, for a woman to do so. Her studies on the social behavior of chimpanzees forever changed how we think about hominids. Much like their human cousins, chimpanzees have a complex social life, a social hierarchy, experience grief, and even engage in warfare. However, the chimpanzees she studied weren’t only scientific subjects to Dr. Goodall; she developed relationships with particular chimps and their descendants, each with a distinct personality. She expanded the reach of her scientific work through effective communication and outreach to the public.
While her scientific studies focused on chimpanzees, Dr. Goodall was also a humanitarian, recognizing the interconnectedness between humans, animals, and the environment. She primarily focused on fostering a love of nature and compassion for animals in young people, with the creation of the Roots and Shoots program in 1991. Today, there are over 8,000 chapters internationally of Roots and Shoots, which connects children from across the world and encourages them to become involved in local community projects.
We have no doubt her legacy and work will continue through programs like Roots and Shoots and the work of the Jane Goodall Institute. Dr. Goodall was a consequential scientific researcher and advocate, and her work serves as a foundation for scientific, environmental, conservation, and humanitarian efforts.
