Erica Williams

Archivist | Arrangement Wizard

"It makes me proud that my job lets me preserve history and cultural heritage resources for future generations, and I absolutely love establishing order over the varying degrees of chaos I find in the collections I work on.”

Work at HAI

Erica is an archivist, database modifier, and project manager. She works with clients to make their collections as long-lasting, searchable, and accessible as possible. She has experience with collections containing paper and digital documents, photographic media, audiovisual items in a variety of formats, and three-dimensional artifacts. Affectionately known as the “Mama Duck” of the archivists, Erica enjoys sharing her experience and creating an upbeat environment that encourages her talented team members to do their best work.

Erica applies an enthusiastic, detail-oriented approach to every project she works on. She works mostly with traditional physical collections but has expanded her knowledge and experience with born-digital collections. At HAI, her work includes processing and describing manuscript collections; cataloging using a variety of systems; assessing archival collections, programs, and storage environments; surveying and inventorying records; managing teams of up to eight staff members; web archiving; and performing reference, research, and outreach tasks as needed.

Path to HAI

Erica majored in English Literature at Providence College, graduating summa cum laude in May 2004. She received her master’s degree in Library and Information Science with a concentration in Archives Management from Simmons College (now Simmons University) in December 2005. During her studies, she participated in an ongoing photograph scanning and cataloging project as an intern at the Harvard Film Archives and processed two small manuscript collections at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. She also volunteered at the Rhode Island Historical Society and the Rhode Island School of Design Archives and performed a variety of processing, cataloging, and clerical tasks at each repository.

Erica joined HAI in January 2006 fresh out of grad school and has been a dedicated member of the team ever since.
