Archival Processing and Description

Folder and files

History Associates processed the Ellen Browning Scripps Papers consisting of approximately sixty cubic feet of materials for the Ella Strong Denison Library of Scripps College in Claremont, California. HAI archivists arranged the collection into records series and conducted basic preservation tasks such as removing harmful fasteners and reboxing and refoldering the collection in acid-free containers and enclosures. In addition, archivists photocopied information printed/written on particularly acidic paper onto acid-free paper to ensure its preservation, placed all photographs and negatives in polyester or acid-free paper sleeves, and protected cracked glass negatives by fabricating sink mats.

HAI helped move the collection into its new home in the Ellen Browning Scripps Room; wrote, edited, and revised a finding aid for the collection; encoded the finding aid in EAD (Encoded Archival Description) format; and coordinated the uploading of the finding aid to the Online Archive of California.
