Roosevelt and Muir
In 1903 naturalist John Muir convinced President Theodore Roosevelt that the federal government should manage and protect California's Yosemite Valley. A century later, our Western Area Office helps clients manage, protect, and utilize state, local, and federal records.

HAI's Western Area Office provides information resources management, litigation support, and historical research and writing services for agencies of the state, local, and federal government, corporations, nonprofits, and other institutions throughout California and the West.

Our services cover a broad spectrum of archival and records management work, as well as computer-related applications including digitization, database design, electronic records management, web page creation, and Encoded Archival Description (EAD) conversion. The Western Area Office team can assess your records and design programs, policies, and procedures for cost-effective management of them. We inventory and schedule current records and organize and describe historical records so that our clients can locate critical information and better document their organization's past. HAI archivists and records managers have done work for a number of private clients based in California. Our many government clients include the cities of Corona, Thousand Oaks, Palos Verdes, and Santa Barbara, the counties of Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, and Santa Clara, the state of California, and the federal government.

Personnel at HAI's Western Area Office work closely with those in Rockville, Maryland, to provide cost-effective historical research to clients who need work done in the West and in Washington. HAI's California staff has years of experience in mining state, local, and federal sources to establish the historical record pertaining to water rights, environmental cleanup, and occupational health matters. They put that knowledge to work through interpretive histories, reports, and expert witness testimony.
