Profiles in Science Receives Society of American Archivists' Hamer Award

The National Library of Medicine's website Profiles in Science, which is staffed by four History Associates Incorporated (HAI) archivists, is the 2007 recipient of the Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award. The award, presented on August 31, 2007, at the Society of American Archivists' annual meeting in Chicago, recognizes individuals or institutions that have increased public awareness of archival documents.

Launched in September 1998, Profiles in Science promotes the use of the Internet for research and teaching in the history of biomedical science through presentation of archival collections of leaders in biomedical research and public health. Profiles in Science was recognized for "its ability to increase public awareness of leading innovators in science, medicine, and public health through its content and presentation of primary documents, complementary text, valuable metadata, and collaboration among archives."

HAI archivists have staffed this project from its inception. Currently, two digital archivists create collection- and item-level metadata, oversee scanning and quality control, and approve digitized materials for public release.

About History Associates Incorporated: For more than twenty-five years the historians and archivists at History Associates Incorporated have demonstrated that history is valuable in the market as well as the marketplace of ideas.
