History Associates Incorporated Completes Work on Third Winchester Battlefield
As part of the grand opening of the Civil War Preservation Trust's (CWPT) Third Winchester Battlefield interpretive trails, History Associates Incorporated (HAI) historians provided a battlefield tour for more than fifty supporters and community members. The tour, which also celebrated the 143rd anniversary of the Third Battle of Winchester, was conducted by HAI historian Garry Adelman, who led the effort to create the interpretive plan for Third Winchester. The battlefield features five miles of walking and biking trails and more than twenty interpretive wayside exhibits developed by HAI historians. It is the most ambitious interpretation project yet for the CWPT, which has saved more than 24,000 acres of battlefield land across sixteen states. HAI is also currently assisting CWPT with its First Day at Chancellorsville battlefield.
The Third Battle of Winchester, fought September 19, 1864, also known as the Battle of Opequon, pitted 15,000 Confederates under General Jubal Early against some 39,000 Union troops under General Phil Sheridan. This first battle of the Shenandoah Campaign resulted in a Union victory and marked the beginning of the end of Early's Army of the Valley.
