HAI Historian Kenneth Durr is Maryland Humanities Council Speaker

Kenneth D. Durr of History Associates Incorporated (HAI) based in Rockville, Maryland, has joined the Speakers Bureau of the Maryland Humanities Council. His topic, "Learning the Language of Rights: White Working-Class Baltimore and the Unexpected Consequences of the Brown Decision," is part of a special initiative: "Brown v. Board—Context and Legacy."

In this presentation Kenneth Durr, author of Behind the Backlash: White Working-Class Politics in Baltimore, 1940-1980, examines the unintended effects of the Brown decision on white working-class Baltimore. The Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision was among the most momentous events of twentieth-century American social and political history. It was a triumph in that it laid the groundwork for a more racially integrated and equitable society, but it also fostered the creation of a fragmented, rights-based Great Society liberalism that was exceptionally vulnerable to attack by populist claims woven deep into the political fabric of the nation.
