NCPH Public History News - Winter 1999/2000

Dr. Rodney Carlisle of History Associates Incorporated in Rockville, Maryland, coauthored Jack Tar: A Sailor's Life, a book chronicling daily life aboard merchant and naval ships between 1750 and 1910. HAI President Philip L. Cantelon and Barbara Howe of West Virginia University co-edited the Summer 1999 issue of The Public Historian, which commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the National Council on Public History. In December Dr. Cantelon completed his term as chair of the Organization of American Historian's Committee on Research and Access to Historical Documentation. Dr. Gabriele Carey, head of HAI's West Coast office, is digitizing local history collections from fifteen Los Angeles County communities. This fall Dr. Carey also participated in workshops about archives, public records, exhibit planning, and the preservation of library history.
