HAI to Interpret Civil War Battlefield
The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) has enlisted History Associates Incorporated (HAI) of Rockville, Maryland, to develop an interpretive plan for the 140-acre Lick Run Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The clash between the Blue and the Gray at Lick Run on May 1, 1863, marked the opening of the Battle of Chancellorsville that proved to be General Robert E. Lee's most brilliant victory.
HAI's interpretive plan will aid the CWPT's effort to make Lick Run Battlefield an educational and heritage tourism site. It will include features such as trails, wayside exhibits, and audio programs. HAI will guide the CWPT in restoring the land itself to its 1860s appearance and will advise on strategies to promote the Lick Run site to visitors and educators.
Early in November 2005 HAI historian Garry Adelman conducted a public meeting with Spotsylvania County officials and residents to discuss plans for the Lick Run site, which the CWPT purchased in 2004 from a developer for $3 million. The meeting generated much enthusiasm for the project, whose completion is expected in about a year.
Mr. Adelman earned his master's degree in history from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and is the author of numerous books and articles about the Civil War. A frequent lecturer at Civil War Round Tables, he has also appeared as a speaker on various historical productions, including one aired on The History Channel. Mr. Adelman serves as vice president of the Center for Civil War Photography and is a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg.
