HAI Historian Brian Martin Published in OAH Newsletter

Brian W. Martin of History Associates Incorporated (HAI), based in Rockville, Maryland, has been published in the May 2002 issue of the Organization of American Historians (OAH) Newsletter. In his article, "Working with Lawyers: A Historian's Perspective," Martin discusses the manner in which lawyers have come to appreciate professional historians as more than simply fact-finders.

Martin, who is HAI's vice president for litigation research, points out that "historians and lawyers share a common professional interest in stories and evidence." Historians typically serve as consultants for attorneys but also as expert witnesses. He summarizes the various business relationships existing between lawyers and historians, budgeting and billing, and ethical issues. He concludes that while historians are not indispensable to attorneys, they "have come to appreciate the skillful practice of history."
