History Associates Vice President Michael C. Reis Offers Insights on Effective Professional Consulting to Federal and Legal Clients

History Associates vice president Michael C. Reis recently participated in two professional development roundtables. In January, Mr. Reis served on a panel entitled "Federal History Careers Inside and Outside the Beltway" at the 124th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association (AHA). Mr. Reis provided an overview of the federal history consulting arena and offered examples of recent project work. The roundtable, sponsored by the Society for History in the Federal Government, an AHA-affiliated group of which Mr. Reis is president for 2009-2010, included historians and archivists from the Office of History and Preservation, U.S. House of Representatives; Office of the Historian, U.S. Department of State; National Archives and Records Administration; and U.S. Forest Service.

In March, Mr. Reis served on a panel entitled "The Challenge of Public History—Integrating Training, Practice, and Policy" at the joint annual meeting of the National Council on Public History and the American Society for Environmental History. Focusing on both the similarities and differences of professional training for historians and attorneys, Mr. Reis illustrated the challenges of operating within the legal community and offered several recommendations on how to ensure a productive, and ultimately beneficial, professional collaboration. The roundtable included historians from Texas State University and Western Michigan University, as well as the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, and Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Mr. Reis has managed a diverse range of projects since he joined History Associates in 1995. He is an expert on documenting corporate succession, reconstructing legislative histories, and providing historic context statements for preservation and cultural resources management. Mr. Reis holds a bachelor's degree in history from Loyola College and a master's degree in history from The George Washington University. He is the author and coauthor of several articles on environmental history.
