History Associates Incorporated Creates Web-based Records Guidance for the National Institutes of Health

On July 17, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of Management Assessment (OMA) launched web-based guidance for transferring and disposing of records. History Associates Incorporated (HAI) created the guide entitled "Moving Inactive Records Out of the Office" to provide NIH employees with a user-friendly site that conveyed the essential aspects of the records disposition process. The site can be viewed at http://oma.od.nih.gov/ms/records/recdisp/.

HAI archivists designed the storyboard, developed the content, and designed the site based on a series of flowcharts. The easily navigable, color-coded site leads users through each step of the records disposition process, with each flowchart focused on one aspect of records management such as determining records disposition, transferring records to a federal records center, using records at a records center, and assigning legal custody of the records to the National Archives and Records Administration. This site answers the majority of questions fielded by the NIH Records Management Officer and provides a valuable resource for records liaisons at NIH.

The HAI team led by Information Resources Management Services deputy director Rachel Ban included archivists Caris Brown, Charles Calhoun, and Abigail Dixon, all of whom have experience managing records in the federal sector.
