History Associates Supports Indian Health Service at Symposium

Senior Historian James P. Rife of History Associates Incorporated recently attended the 43rd annual U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Scientific and Training Symposium in Tucson, Arizona, in support of the U.S. Indian Health Service's ongoing "Gold Book" History Project.

The symposium was sponsored by the Commissioned Officers Association, and its theme for 2008 was "Public Health Strategies for the New Millennium." The agenda addressed current public health issues including global disease detection, emergency preparedness and response, and environmental health. USPHS's rich history was a predominant theme during the symposium, and Mr. Rife assisted Project Coordinator Captain Alan Dellapenna, Jr., in presenting historical information and staffing a photographic and electronic media exhibit. The presentation highlighted the Indian Health Service's achievements in elevating the status of Indian health since the agency's 1955 transfer from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to USPHS.

Mr. Rife and Captain Dellapenna are currently completing an illustrated history of the agency, entitled Caring & Curing: A History of the U.S. Indian Health Service, to be published by the Commissioned Officers Association, with a forthcoming publication date of Fall 2008.
