History Associates Completes Fauquier County Civil War Project with “Bivouacs & Battlefields” Symposium
History Associates Senior Historian Garry Adelman and Research Historian Mary Bays were among a group of esteemed historians that presented at “Bivouacs & Battlefields” on March 28, 2009. The one-day symposium, held at Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Virginia, brought together professional historians, local residents, property owners, and Civil War enthusiasts to celebrate Fauquier County’s unique Civil War legacy.
Mr. Adelman gave two slide show presentations, The Civil War in the East: Then & Now and The Bristoe Campaign of 1863. Ms. Bays presented The Northern Virginia Campaign detailing how the armies fought and marched through Fauquier County as they moved northward in the summer of 1862. The other speakers included Robert K. Krick, Clark “Bud” Hall, Childs Burden, and Bob Zeller who spoke on various aspects of Fauquier County’s Civil War experience, using firsthand accounts and photographs to bring the story to life.
The symposium culminated a year-long project between Fauquier County Community Development and History Associates to raise awareness among county residents about the important history surrounding them. During the symposium, Kimberly Abe, Fauquier County Senior Planner, noted “It was difficult to find a contractor with the specific expertise we needed. Eventually we found History Associates, who proved to be the perfect consultants.”
In addition to the symposium, History Associates also researched and designed brochures on twelve battles and engagements that took place in Fauquier County. To complement the brochures, History Associates also authored a short history on the Civil War in Fauquier County; created a guide explaining how residents can use resources and information around them to learn more about Civil War sites; and highlighted grass-roots preservation initiatives to help residents preserve historic resources for future generations.
