HAI Historian Kenneth Durr Appears on Public Radio, Discusses New Book

Kenneth D. Durr of History Associates Incorporated (HAI) based in Rockville, Maryland, appeared on the Marc Steiner Show on the Baltimore public radio station WYPR to discuss interesting questions raised in his new book, Behind the Backlash: White Working-Class Politics in Baltimore, 1940-1980. The Marc Steiner show airs on weekdays at noon.

Durr, appearing along with labor historian Bill Berry, discussed significant labor issues in Baltimore during World War II and in the following decades, racial change in the city, and busing and the fight against urban highway construction in the 1970s. In his book, Durr challenges notions that the "white backlash" of the 1960s and 1970s was driven by increasing race resentment. He details the rise of a working-class populism shaped by mistrust of the means and ends of postwar liberalism in the face of urban decline. Behind the Backlash is available through the University of North Carolina Press at http://uncpress.unc.edu/books/T-5181.html.
