SENIOR HISTORIAN

History Associates Incorporated, a historical consulting firm in Rockville, Maryland, invites applications for a historian on track to qualify as deputy director of its History Division.  The successful applicant must be able to write, edit and sell our history services to enable ongoing business expansion and provide for succession.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Researching and writing commissioned history in a variety of formats, including books, videos, and Web content
  • Developing new business leads and cultivating existing client relationships
  • Supervise, train and mentor junior historians
  • Win business and complete projects for clients in Fortune 100 corporations, major not-for-profits, and federal agencies

Required Qualifications:

  • Client management and/or business development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects within established time frames and budgets
  • Expertise in business, economic, political, or related fields
  • Flexibility to travel within the United States and abroad to conduct research
  • Demonstrated ability to write fast-paced narrative history in a popular style and expertise in business, economic, political, or closely related fields
  • Valid driver’s license
  • MA or Ph.D. in U.S. history.

Salary range for this position: $53,560-$63,500. In addition, History Associates offers an excellent benefits package.

SENIOR RECORDS MANAGER

History Associates is seeking an experienced Records Manager to enhance its records management consulting services. This line of business focuses on advising clients on the policies and processes involved in developing and implementing effective records management programs, providing hands-on support through phases of the records management life-cycle, providing records management training for client staff, and selecting and implementing electronic records management systems.

Responsibilities:

Working under the direction of the Vice President for Information Resources Management (IRM), the Senior Records Manager will lead the company’s efforts to identify, win, staff, and perform records management engagements. Although initially the job will focus on managing existing records management projects, the Senior Records Manager will have primary responsibility for expanding our records management service line with support from the VP for IRM and the Marketing Director.

As appropriate, the Senior Records Manager will pursue partnerships and subcontracting opportunities with other firms specializing in various aspects of paper and digital records management.

The Senior Records Manager will also be responsible for furthering the firm’s collective knowledge of records management issues through professional development and training activities.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates a mastery of records management principles and practices
  • Project management experience including client relations, budget and schedule management, staff supervision, and quality assurance
  • A working knowledge of electronic records management systems
  • Broad familiarity with the latest trends and best practices in records management, and the ability to convey and apply that knowledge in a consulting capacity
  • An understanding of the integral connections between records management and archives management
  • Experience conducting records management training
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Flexibility to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

The ideal candidate should possess relevant education and training:

  • BA or Master’s degree in information management or a related discipline
  • Certified Records Manager preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working as a records manager
  • Training and experience with one or more of the major ERMS products and the MS Office Suite

RECORDS MANAGER/ARCHIVIST

To meet our ever-increasing workload, History Associates is seeking experienced records managers/archivists with at least two years of experience performing records management tasks and archival tasks.

History Associates is based in Rockville, Maryland, and operates nationwide. Clients include corporations, associations, non-profit organizations, and state, local, and federal governments. Our archivists/records managers perform a wide range of archival and records management activities with professional support and guidance from senior staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct records surveys and inventories of paper and electronic records for archival and records management assessments
  • Undertake records analysis, and develop and implement records schedules and file classification plans
  • Perform research and prepares written and oral presentations and reports to clients
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to clients
  • Conduct training sessions
  • Perform related administrative duties

Required Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in library science, or related discipline with degree concentration in archival studies or supplemented by archival courses, seminars, or practica
  • Broad experience in records management activities that may include records scheduling, file classification plans, imaging/digitization and records center operations
  • Minimum two years experience appraising, describing and scheduling records
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret records and submit written descriptions of record groups and collections
  • Demonstrated experience in developing records schedules, and file classification plans
  • Knowledge of, and an interest in, electronic records issues
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, schedule, and organize work
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others, set goals, and prioritize work
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise discretion, initiative, and judgment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with office productivity software suites and database software packages

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) records management procedures, guidelines, and standards
  • Familiarity with the General Records Schedules (GRS)
  • Experience inventorying, assessing, and scheduling records at a federal agency

COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN

History Associates has an exciting opportunity available for individuals specializing in artifact cataloging and living in and near Quantico, VA. Position is part-time; sixteen hours per week and consists of cataloging museum artifacts at a client’s site located in Quantico, Virginia. This project has a projected start date of July 2013 and will run for approximately twelve months

The Collections Technician will have overall responsibility for the artifact cataloging and condition assessment portion of the project. Tasks include; cataloging artifacts using KE EMu collections management system, researching artifact provenance, applying standard cataloging nomenclature to catalog records, and taking and recording artifact dimensions. The ideal candidate will have also have photographic and digital processing experience, strong background in condition reporting and be able to meet deadlines while maintaining museum-quality standards.

The position will involve both working independently and with project and agency staff based on-site. The Collections Technician will operate under the supervision of an on-site Collections Manager and a Director based in Rockville, MD.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in History, Museum Studies, or other applicable field
  • Minimum 2 years’  experience in handling and cataloging museum artifacts at a recognized museum
  • Experience with KE Emu database: cataloging, image upload and reporting
  • Experience with object photography, re-housing and labeling artifacts and containers
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience conducting condition assessments and completing condition reports.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a small, high performance team
  • Demonstrated ability independently set and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Knowledge or experience handling uniforms, weapons, vehicles, medals, flags, aircraft, works of art and other artifacts
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create concise reports and to effectively participate in and/or lead team meetings

This position is eligible for paid leave.
