ARCHIVIST - NY

History Associates Incorporated has an immediate opening for a qualified archivist who enjoys varied, interesting, and challenging work. The position offers the opportunity for a motivated lone arranger to work for a Fortune 500 company based in East Fishkill, NY. Duties include establishing an archival arrangement for corporate records, while placing them in appropriate archival housing; describing the records by means of an electronic database; and providing some reference services.

HAI, an archival, records management, and historical services firm located in Rockville, Maryland, operates nationwide. Clients include corporations, associations, nonprofit organizations, and state, local, and federal governments. Our archivists and records managers perform a wide range of archival and records management activities with professional support and guidance from senior staff.

Starting salary is $37,530.00. Excellent benefits package.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library science, history, or related discipline with degree concentration in archival studies or supplemented by archival courses, seminars, or practica

  • One year of experience appraising, arranging, and describing archival records

  • Ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret records and submit written descriptions of record groups and collections

  • Demonstrated, practical knowledge of archival policies and procedures

  • Ability to work independently and to exercise discretion, initiative, and judgment

  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others

  • Familiarity with major word processing and database software packages; knowledge of Gallery Systems TMS a plus

  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills

ARTIFACT HISTORIAN - CONSULTANT

History Associates is seeking an experienced historian in the field of military artifacts. This is a multi-year project with an average of 600 hours per year.

HAI has been a leader in providing historical, archival, and records management services to both the public and private sectors for more than twenty-five years. We have built our reputation over the last quarter-century by consistently providing the highest quality service to our clients.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA in history

  • Ten years' experience in curatorial work with military artifacts, especially US Army related materials, including: research on military artifacts, the history of military equipment and ordnance, and the preservation and restoration of military artifacts

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and an eye for detail

  • Accustomed to working independently and to reporting findings and receiving research direction electronically and by telephone

  • Flexibility to travel to periodic meetings held in D.C.

HISTORIAN OF SCIENCE AND MEDICINE

History Associates Incorporated (HAI) is actively seeking a historian of science and medicine to participate in a digital archives project.

HAI has been a leader in providing historical, archival, and records management services to both the public and private sectors for over twenty-five years. We have built this reputation by consistently providing the highest quality of service to our clients.

Responsibilities:

The historian will provide historical research and writing services necessary to make the archival collections of pioneering biomedical scientists, public health officials, and science administrators of the twentieth century available through its Profiles in Science project on the World Wide Web.

Duties:

The historian shall identify and select documents for inclusion in the Profiles in Science digital publication according to historical significance; analyze and interpret them; edit them on-line; conduct research in the history of biomedical science, medical research policy, public health, and health care related to the documents; and write concise interpretive narratives that provide historical context for the documents.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in twentieth-century U.S. history

  • Specialization in the history of medicine, either in doctoral dissertation or through subsequent scholarly work

  • Demonstrable knowledge of twentieth-century American science and medicine, public health, and health policy and strong writing skills through peer-reviewed publications and/or exhibit work

  • Experience in surveying and evaluating large amounts of primary archival manuscript sources and expertise in the use of electronic archival and bibliographic databases

  • Demonstrable ability to successfully carry out highly specific research, interpretation, and writing tasks according to a tightly defined schedule

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team setting
