History Associates' James P. Rife Authors History of U.S. Navy Seabees in Iraq War
History Associates senior historian James P. Rife recently authored, with Rear Admiral Charles R. Kubic, CEC, U.S. Navy (ret.), Bridges to Baghdad: The U.S. Navy Seabees in the Iraq War.
Bridges to Baghdad examines the history of the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Iraq War and the ongoing Global War on Terrorism. The book chronicles the individual experience of the "fighting Seabees," the premier expeditionary construction force, from their deployment in Kuwait in the fall of 2002 through their redeployment to Iraq as part of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II in 2004. Bridges to Baghdad also recounts the Seabees' operations at the command level from the perspective of their commander, Rear Admiral Kubic, including the story of the creation and employment of a new division-level organization, the First Marine Expeditionary Force Engineer Group. This was the first Naval Expeditionary Engineer formation of its kind since World War II.
Mr. Rife works in the History Division at History Associates Incorporated in Rockville, Maryland, and specializes in military history and the history of weapons technology. His other publications include The Sound of Freedom: U.S. Naval Weapons Technology at Dahlgren, Virginia, 1918-2006, and Caring & Curing: A History of the U.S. Indian Health Service. Mr. Rife received his master's degree in American military history from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1999. Rear Admiral Kubic is currently president of ECC International, LCC, a global expeditionary engineering company headquartered in Burlingame, California.
