Senior Historian Garry Adelman Published in Hallowed Ground

History Associates senior historian Garry Adelman recently published the article “Ramparts of Rock: The Natural Fortifications of Gettysburg’s Geology,” in Hallowed Ground, the magazine of the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT). The article, co-authored by historian Timothy Smith, details the history of the battlefield’s rocks, their presence in Civil War photography, and changes to the landscape over time.

In the article, Messrs. Adelman and Smith tell the story of Gettysburg’s natural landscape before, during and after the Civil War. During the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, Gettysburg’s rocky terrain proved both offensive obstacles and defensive fortifications for soldiers engaged in fierce fighting. After the war, commercial enterprisers exploited the rocky terrain for personal gain. Exploitation of Gettysburg’s boulders by ghost hunters and would-be historians continues to this day. By examining this exploitation, the authors marry the themes of history and preservation, all the while presenting photography as a means to capture history without damaging the historical integrity of a battlefield—a theme in which CWPT is particularly interested. History Associates and CWPT have worked together on numerous projects aimed at learning about, preserving, and interpreting CWPT’s battlefields.

Mr. Adelman is the deputy director of the History Division at History Associates, Incorporated in Rockville, Maryland. He is also the vice president of the Center for Civil War Photography and a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg. He is the author of more than two dozen Civil War books and articles.
